
Adobe Digital Editions and Nook
The Nook line of e-book readers are compatible with open-source ePUB files. Adobe Digital Editions software is used to manage borrowed e-book files. Follow the instructions below to read borrowed e-books on your Nook. For more information, read About the Lending Period or the Troubleshooting help.
Your computer and Nook will both have to be authorized in the Adobe Digital Editions software. A free Adobe ID is required: Adobe Membership.
Nook
- Plug your Nook into the USB of your home computer. It should appear as a mounted device on your computer.
Adobe Digital Editions
- Download and install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer: www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions.
- Start the Adobe Digital Editions software. The Nook icon should appear on the left side of the screen.
- You will be prompted to authorize your computer and Nook. The same email address should be used for both authorizations.
MVLC Digital Downloads and Freading
- Sign in to MVLC Digital Downloads or Freading using your library card number.
- Find an available e-book that is offered in the ePUB format.
- Download the file to your computer. (The MVLC borrowing process includes a bookbag step.)
- If a prompt appears, open the file with Adobe Digital Editions.
Adobe Digital Editions
- Look for the downloaded e-book on the borrowed bookshelf.
- Drag the e-book onto the Nook icon.
- Eject your Nook and disconnect it from the USB port.
Nook
- On the Nook, Go to My Library > View My Documents. Your borrowed library book should be there. Enjoy!

About the Lending Period
- To return a book in Adobe Digital Editions.
- View the borrowed bookshelf. Click on the icon above a book cover, then select ‘Return Borrowed Item’. After returning the item, you may also need to delete the book from your Nook as a final step. It may take several hours for the returned item to be removed from ‘My Digital Checkouts’ in your account on the MVLC website.
- Lending period expiration: Nook.
- Attempting to open an expired book on the Nook will return this message: ‘The lending period for this eBook has expired.’ The book can be deleted from your Nook via Adobe Digital Editions.
- Lending period expiration: Adobe Digital Editions.
- View the borrowed bookshelf. Once the lending period for a book expires, an 'expired' banner will appear over the cover in Adobe Digital Editions. Click on the icon above the book cover, then select ‘Delete Item’.
Troubleshooting
- Trouble transferring books to Nook.
- The Nook must be turned on to move files onto the device.
- Nook icon does not appear in Adobe Digital Editions.
- Try connecting the Nook before starting the Adobe Digital Editions software. This helps Adobe Digital Editions recognize the connected Nook device.
- Downloaded books do not appear in Adobe Digital Editions.
- Look for the book file where downloads are typically saved on your computer. Book files should have the file extension '.acsm'. Double click the file to add it to Adobe Digital Editions.
- The 'Add Item to Library' function in Adobe Digital Editions does not work.
